Your complete entertainment guide to the week ahead

This week offers a lot of entertainment choices for everyone. In cinemas, you can watch the new Supergirl movie, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin. The film is part of a new DC Universe and shows Supergirl travelling the galaxy on a mission of revenge.

For fans of comedy stunts, Jackass is back with another film called Best and Last. Even though the cast is getting older, they are still doing crazy stunts. Also in cinemas is Blue Heron, a drama based on the childhood experiences of director Sophy Romvari, and The Furious, an action movie about child trafficking in Asia.

Music lovers have many options too. The Love Supreme jazz festival features artists like Ezra Collective and Loyle Carner. Sunn O))), known for their loud drone metal, are touring, and Glasgow Summer Sessions includes performances from The Lumineers, Alanis Morissette, and My Chemical Romance. If you prefer theatre, there’s Songs of the Bulbul, a dance solo inspired by a myth, and Palestine: Peace De Resistance, a show about the situation in Gaza.

Art exhibitions this week include Jonathan Baldock’s mythical world of ceramics and textiles in Bristol, and Zayd Menk’s show using salvaged electronics to explore technology ethics in London. The National Gallery in London presents Waldmüller, focusing on 19th-century Austrian landscapes, while Ai Weiwei’s exhibition in Manchester looks at Chinese-British history.

For those staying in, HBO Max has Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, a comedy series with Larry David looking at America’s past. Apple TV’s Silo continues its third season, exploring a dystopian future where humanity lives underground. On Disney+, X-Men ’97 returns for its second season, following the mutant crew across different time periods. There are also new albums from Muse and Ryan Beatty, and the podcast Actors Never Retire explores the careers of older actors.

Finally, for games, there's a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic Star Fox and a Star Wars-themed version of Monopoly. For 'brain food', check out the podcast Actors Never Retire or a YouTube investigation into the origins of ‘Lorem Ipsum’ text.
