Halifax will disappear from the UK high street as Lloyds stops using the bank brand after 173 years

Lloyds Banking Group has decided to stop using the Halifax brand. This means the 173-year-old name will no longer be seen on the UK high streets.

From now on, no new accounts will be opened with the Halifax name. Existing accounts will slowly be changed to the Lloyds brand over the next few days. Lloyds Banking Group has 531 branches in total. They will begin removing the Halifax signs from 190 branches starting in early 2027. Importantly, no branches will close because of this change.

This decision was first reported in May and has caused some unhappiness among loyal customers. People who live in the town of Halifax, where the bank got its name, are also concerned. This change follows a review of how Lloyds uses its brands, which started this spring.

Since 2009, the group has used three brands: Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland. This happened after financial problems in 2008. Now, Lloyds will be the main brand in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Bank of Scotland brand will still be used for customers in Scotland.

The bank has promised customers that their sort codes and account numbers will stay the same. Halifax is a very old and well-known bank in the UK. It started in the mid-1800s as a building society to help people buy or build homes. Over many years, it grew to become a large bank before it was bought by Lloyds.

Lloyds says that Halifax customers will still have the same app and can see the same people in branches. They will also keep their sort code and account number. The company believes that as Lloyds customers, they will get new and better services and innovations from Lloyds.
