Country diary: Beaver-style flood defences take root amid a hosepipe ban

The sweet chestnut trees are shedding their catkins, which fall like long yellow decorations. More than 20 wasps are busy on the bonnet of my car, apparently feeding on sticky tree sap or perhaps dead insects.

The hay has been cut. The amount harvested wasn't large, but it was better than last year. Two red kites are hunting in the sky above the freshly cut meadows, which smell sweet from coumarin, while swallows fly low over the fields. Usually, these empty fields would invite a horse to gallop, but the ground is now as hard as a paved road when you walk on it. If no rain falls soon, it seems unlikely that a second cutting of hay will be possible.

A ban on using hosepipes has just been introduced, affecting the East Anglia region, which is currently the driest part of the country. It is difficult to even imagine a heavy downpour at this moment. However, a village just a few miles away has been preparing for exactly that kind of situation.

Back in December 2020, it rained continuously for days. The water drainage systems could not handle the large volume of water rushing off the fields. The village street turned into a fast, shallow, brown river, and sandbags were not sufficient to prevent homes from flooding. The road itself was often submerged, making it impassable for smaller cars. Flood warning signs were put up, and local volunteers bravely went out to keep the drains clear. That Christmas was a particularly difficult time for everyone.

But the situation has now changed. As I walk down Wash Lane, which is aptly named, I see a deep dip where the watercourse is completely dry. There are four large structures here. They are made of wood and are known as leaky dams or logjams. Their purpose is to catch debris and naturally slow down the flow of water.

Norfolk county council has spent over £35,000 on this project. The idea is inspired by nature’s original and most effective builders: beavers. Beavers cut down trees to build their dams and homes. By doing so, they reduce the speed of water flow and create ponds where dragonflies and amphibians can live and reproduce.

There are no beavers living in this particular area. While a few beavers have been released in Norfolk, and some have successfully had young, they are not located nearby. Nevertheless, the timber barriers have been constructed to slow water naturally. However, there are plans for a large solar power development in the surrounding fields, which could change how rainwater drains away. Climate change is causing extreme weather patterns, but surely the solutions we implement should be as intelligent as those used by beavers, working to improve the health of the entire landscape and allowing more space for nature, not less.
