A period where Arctic sea ice melt appeared to be slowing down has now concluded, according to new research. Scientists have observed the largest year-to-year decrease in winter sea ice that has ever been recorded.

Previously, a study published last year suggested that the rate of Arctic sea ice melting had decreased over the last two decades. This study found no significant change in its size between 2005 and 2024, which was surprising given the rise in global temperatures.

At that time, researchers suggested that natural changes in ocean currents might have temporarily offset the effects of global warming, limiting ice melt. They predicted that this pause was likely temporary and that melting would resume at roughly double the usual rate within the next five to ten years.

However, a more recent study, released just two years later, has now confirmed that the slowdown in Arctic sea ice loss is over. By analysing the latest satellite data on sea ice coverage, the researchers concluded that the slowdown observed from 2005 to 2024 was a short-term event, not a lasting change.

Dr Duo Chan, the main author of the new paper from the University of Southampton, explained that what seemed like a pause in the early 2020s now appears to have been just a temporary reduction in the ongoing long-term decline. Since satellite measurements began in 1979, the amount of sea ice in September, when it is at its smallest, has been cut in half.

The latest findings reveal that between 2024 and 2025, Arctic sea ice decreased by 5.8%. This represents the most significant year-on-year drop recorded during the winter season. While this sharp decrease is unusual, researchers state it is a plausible event given the current warming trends in the Arctic.

The reduction in winter sea ice has important implications. This ice acts as a barrier, insulating the warmer Arctic ocean from the much colder atmosphere. When there is less ice, more heat and moisture can escape from the ocean into the atmosphere. Scientists believe this can influence atmospheric pressure, the formation of storms, and large-scale weather patterns, potentially affecting weather conditions further south.
